Preparing Students for College Readiness Assessments

Building student confidence and teacher capacity with Prep Path: College

Preparing for college entrance exams takes more than reviewing content. Students also need opportunities to understand the assessment, practice time management, and apply what they have learned to unfamiliar questions. Teachers need practical ways to provide that preparation within a full instructional calendar.

Prep Path: College, part of the Kids First Education Prep Path Series, supports both needs through college-readiness instruction, targeted mini-lessons, and assessment strategies.

Test Preparation Matters

Entrance exams continue to play a role in college admissions, scholarship eligibility, and course placement. Their importance varies by institution, so students and families should review the requirements for their intended enrollment year.

Some universities have reinstated testing requirements. Stanford and Cornell, for example, require scores for students entering in fall 2026 and beyond. Auburn requires scores for applicants entering in fall 2027. Other institutions retain test-optional pathways or apply different requirements based on GPA.

Scholarship requirements can differ from admission requirements. At the University of Alabama, automatic merit scholarships for out-of-state and international first-year students entering in 2027 use both GPA and entrance exam scores. For eligible students, moving into a higher score range can increase the annual award.

Scores can also influence a student's first college courses. LSU, for example, uses mathematics entrance exam scores for course placement and offers additional assessments when those scores are unavailable.

For schools, these policies offer a practical reason to make assessment preparation part of ongoing instruction. Students need time to strengthen academic skills and practice using them in the formats they will encounter.

Prep Path Supports Teachers

Prep Path: College provides instructional resources and professional learning focused on the skills and concepts assessed on college-readiness exams. Teachers learn to:

  • Identify the skills and concepts assessed across relevant content areas.
  • Integrate targeted mini-lessons and modules into classroom instruction.
  • Teach strategies for interpreting questions and managing time.

Prep Path Supports Students

The program gives students structured opportunities to prepare for assessment demands. Students practice how to:

  • Set specific learning goals across relevant content areas.
  • Understand assessment structures and scoring formats.
  • Apply content knowledge to assessment questions.
  • Use time-management and problem-solving strategies.

These activities help students approach assessments with greater familiarity and a clearer plan for using what they know.

Prep Path Supports Classroom Instruction

Prep Path: College centers on mini-lessons, instructional modules, and practice activities that teachers can incorporate into their existing instruction. The focus is on connecting academic content with the ways students will be asked to apply it on college entrance and placement exams.

By building teacher capacity alongside student skills, schools can make assessment preparation a regular part of instruction throughout the year.
